Triumph of the Night Sky

“My Neverland” by Katherine Shanline (Sterling College)

There is a bitter triumph
in crashing
when you should be soaring;
(a certain beauty
in setting in the world
on fire
and watching from the center
of the flames).
Becoming something known.
Astralis:
A little star.

Her story was told by
twinkles
in the sky.
And she wanted to crush them
in her hands;
to feel the
stardust
in her veins
have the cosmos;
swim in her eyes.

The gods could not tell her
what she meant
to be;
who’d she live to
become;
what her legacy
foretold.
So she erupted
her own fate
and shone so brightly
that no man,
or god,
would ever stare too long
except for when she was
gone.
